The Science Behind Binaural Beats

When two slightly different frequencies are presented to each ear, the brain perceives a third tone — the binaural beat — equal to the difference between them. This phenomenon, discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839, has profound implications for consciousness exploration.

Some EEG studies report that binaural beats can nudge brainwave activity toward the frequency of the beat, though how strong and reliable the effect is — and whether it goes beyond simple relaxation — remains a genuinely open and contested question in the literature. The bands are usually described like this: Delta (0.5–4 Hz) with deep sleep, Theta (4–8 Hz) with drowsy, meditative states, Alpha (8–13 Hz) with calm wakefulness, Beta (13–30 Hz) with alert focus, and Gamma (30–100 Hz) with intense concentration.
